April is Bowel Cancer Awareness Month – A Time to Act for Your Health

Why Screening Matters

Bowel cancer often doesn’t show symptoms in its early stages, but screening can help identify it before it becomes more serious. Regular screening is particularly important for those aged 50-60, as this group is at higher risk but may not always take part in screening or seek medical advice if they notice any symptoms.

What’s Happening in Brent?

In partnership with RM Partners North West & South West London Cancer Alliance, a local bowel cancer awareness campaign is taking place in Brent. The goal is to encourage participation in bowel cancer screening and to urge people to contact their GP practice if they experience any potential symptoms.

The campaign launched on April 10th with a Health Bus event in Wembley Central Square, where members of the public could receive health checks and access information about bowel cancer and screening.

What You Can Do

If you’re aged 50-74, you’re eligible for bowel cancer screening. This year, many people in their 50s will receive a home screening kit for the first time. If you receive a screening kit, please complete it and send it back – it’s an important step in staying healthy.

If you notice any changes in your bowel habits, blood in your stool, or unexplained weight loss, contact your GP practice as soon as possible. Early detection improves treatment outcomes.

Let’s work together to raise awareness about bowel cancer and the importance of early detection.
